People

Frances Manwaring

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Becoming Moxie’s co-owner in 2010 was the natural extension of a career focused on helping great ideas reach the world. Originally from Scotland, Frances was London-based for 14 years before moving to New Zealand in the mid-nineties. She is an experienced company director with an international career spanning the public and private sectors and various industries, including international media, venture capital, retail, ICT, and consulting.

Frances has worked with, obsessed about, created, managed, and refreshed brands for herself and other people throughout her career. She has co-founded several businesses, most recently, ShowGizmo, a pioneering event app. During her time with Moxie, she has worked alongside many of New Zealand’s leading charities, NGOs and government entities.

Frances advocates for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to change the world by design. She led Moxie’s recent campaign to increase public awareness of the SDGs and their wider adoption.

Singing, creative writing, reading (satire, history and science fantasy in particular) — and walking are how she stays centred and inspired.

Katie Williams

DESIGN DIRECTOR

Having cut her teeth in the fast-paced advertising world as a junior retail art director, Katie focused her skills on design and illustration with Ogilvy New Zealand. There, she worked with blue-chip brands, including American Express, BP, Bendon, and Hyundai.

She has extensive experience as a creative director and in campaign concept development and activation for some of New Zealand’s best-known brands. After returning to New Zealand from a period designing in the UK, Katie has worked as a senior designer with various Wellington design agencies as well as taking on freelance work between babies.

Katie believes high-calibre design in this country must create and enhance a sense of national identity — a sense of our ‘New Zealandness’ — through paying homage to the Māori culture in a respectful way and representing the diversity of people who call Aotearoa home.

In between designing she can be found ‘mumming’, painting, or mountain biking.

Nick Salmon

Senior Designer

Nick is an all-round good guy who loves using design and creative alchemy to turn ideas into gold.

He joined Moxie after several years as brand Creative director at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), where he set the brand's creative direction, developed concepts for advertising campaigns, and managed the development of the visual identity and brand strategy.

In addition to his design skills, Nick is also a talented illustrator and photographer.

LeeAnne Berney

Creative artworker

LeeAnne is a creative artworker and one of Wellington’s most experienced Mac Operators, having worked with many of the top design studios during her career. While she is an expert at every aspect of creative production, LeeAnne says financials are her ‘thing’. Her exceptional attention to detail, excellent organisational and communications skill and extensive understanding of pre-press make her an asset to any project. She loves architecture and interior design, travel and ballet.

John Lumsden

Director & CHAIR

John brings Moxie a wealth of global experience and governance expertise.

He was chair of the Standards Council of New Zealand for five years and has been President of the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce and Deputy Chair of Grow Wellington, the regional economic development agency. He also served on the Global Board of KEA, New Zealand's overseas network for several years.

Until early 2007 John was the Chief Executive of the Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited (MetService), a position he held since its establishment as a State-Owned Enterprise in 1992. Under his leadership, a world-class meteorological service was developed that now provides services to customers around the globe. He served on the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization, a UN Specialised Agency, from 2003 to 2007.

Before MetService, John’s work experience started as an engineer with ICI in the UK, then continued with Alcan in Jamaica and Canada. He held senior executive positions with Unilever Canada and Labatt Breweries of Canada.

John's particular areas of interest are innovation, sustainable development and whisky distilling.

Paul Linton

ADVISOR

Paul has spent more than 30 years launching new brands and companies and developing global business opportunities. His experience spans SMEs to listed businesses, Government, State-Owned Enterprises and Crown Research Institutes to ambitious international technology startups. His range of knowledge spans most of New Zealand's industry sectors.

Paul is currently Chief Executive at Northland Inc where he is focused on making positive changes for Northland’s economy. Previously he held the position of Chief Innovation Officer at Callaghan Innovation managing Callaghan’s science and technical engagements with companies throughout New Zealand to solve challenging technical problems and build prototypes to commercialise further. He was also responsible for Callaghan’s two export businesses and our national metrology institute, MSL, and sector business advisory services to New Zealand companies.

He has held senior positions with MetService of New Zealand, Airways New Zealand, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise and software company Objective Corporation. He has also held roles as New Zealand's trade commissioner in Australia, Asia and the Pacific Islands, where he helped New Zealand businesses develop and grow international markets. Paul has also been the director of several international ventures.
